What are the causes of Dark Eye Circles?

Skin Pigmentations

As we age melanin is laid down in the skin resulting in skin pigmentations. Furthermore, our thin capillaries tend to “leak”, resulting in red blood cells depositing in the skin. When the haemoglobin in these red blood cells breakdown, it leaves behind iron pigments resulting in the dark blue-black color below the eyes

Thin Skin

As under-eye skin tends to be thin, the underlying blood vessels are more obvious. This also contributes to the dark bluish hue.

Loss of Volume

As we age we lose fats and hyaluronic acid. This results in sunken eyes. As the skin thins out, it exposes the tiny blood vessels giving rise to the dark circles.

Eye bags

Eye bags are caused by the fat pads protruding towards the skin surface.

The bulging eye bags cause a shadow on the underside of the eye bags, giving rise to the dark circles. The underlying fine blood vessels are also pushed upwards towards the skin giving it a darker look.

How do we treat dark eye circles?

  The lower eyelid margin bulge is caused by the prominent pre-tarsal muscles. Small amounts of Botox or Dysport will smoothen out the bulge, taking away the tired look.
