SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
(Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy)

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy( ESWT)

Shockwave Therapy( ESWT) has been used by hospitals and physiotherapists  worldwide for the last 35 years.

It is used primarily to treat many musculoskeletal pains affecting muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The shockwave system uses the ballistic principle of shockwave generation. A pressure wave is formed via a projectile by using accelerated compressed air. The compressed air is generated by an electronically- controlled ballistic-pressure compressor. Using elastic impact , the kinetic energy of the projectile is transferred into the probe of the applicator and then through the patient’s skin and underlying muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The shockwave is aimed at the affected areas that are the source of chronic pain.

Mechanism of Actions

  •  Stimulating New Blood vessels Formation.

ESWT stimulates the production of new blood vessels at the affected muscles and tendons by increasing the release of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factors (VGEF) , Growth Factor Beta 1, chemotactic and mitogenic effect on otseoblasts.

  • Cellular effects

Increase in cell membrane transmittance by improving ionic channels activity, stimulating cell division, stimulation of cellular cytokines production.

  • Effect on nitogen oxide system: Bone healing and remodeling
  •  Improvement of microcirculation and metabolism.
  • Dissolution of calcified fibroblasts.
  • Increase collagen production.

This is important in the repair of myoskeletal and ligamental structures

  • Reduction of tissue tension
  • Analgesic pain relief
  • Reversal of Chronic Inflammation

Shockwave Therapy can treat the following conditions

  • Neckpain
  • Backpain
  • Shoulder – Frozen Shoulder, ,Rotator Cuff calcific tendinitis
  • Elbow– Tennis elbows , Golfers Elbows
  • Wrists pain
  • Hip Pain– Bursitis
  • Upper Leg – Tight Iliotibial Bands
  • Knees– Patellar tendonitis
  • Lower legs– Shin splints
  • Ankles– Strain and sprains
  • Feet– Heel Spurs, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis

What would I feel ?

During Treatment you may experience tenderness at the site of treatment. But as the treatment progress, most patients feel that the pain actually decreases. The intensity of the energy delivered can be adjusted to the patient’s comfort.

After treatment ,you may experience temporary soreness, tenderness and swelling for a few days following the procedure as the shockwave stimulate an inflammatory response.

You can return to work immediately.

Who are not suitable for Shockwave Therapy?

You should not have shockwave therapy if you  have

  • Any circulatory or nerve disorder
  • Open Wound
  • Infection
  • Bone Tumor
  • Metabolic Bone disease
  • Pregnant
  • Blood thinners
  • Pacemaker
